WHAT’S AMNESTY What’s Hiroshima group of Amnesty International Japan?

Hiroshima group of Amnesty International Japan was established in 1987 after the lecture of a former chair of Japanese Section, Edith Hanson was held in Hiroshima.

Our group was officially accredited as Group #91 of Amnesty International Japan in 1989.

We had adopted a prisoner of conscience in USSR by the request of International Secretariat then. He was released in 1991.Hiroshima group later took the case of Mordechai Vanunu, a former Israeli nuclear engineer, who had been imprisoned as he had leaked the secret of Israeli nuclear weapons. He was released in 2004 and the convener of Hiroshima group met him in Israel. However, he has not been allowed to leave Israel by the authorities by now.

We have held many lectures inviting specialists, former prisoners of conscience, and so on, and shown the movies for raising the awareness about human rights.We also have held Amnesty Benefit Concerts and sold Amnesty goods in civic rallies and festivals for the fund raising.

We usually have a meeting every other month, at the heart of which is the writing of letters and postcards on behalf of prisoners of conscience or people whose human rights are abused by authoritiesall over the world. Some part of the time is also spent discussing the various issues concerning human rights or group projects.
